Complete Control

January - April, 2016

A childhood dream come true.

A new genre of television started to air in the late 1990s which I was fortunate enough to experience - competitive robot fighting. UK based Robot Wars and US based BattleBots were the more popular ones. It had a big impact on me and got me interested in robotics. I distinctly remember thinking that someday I would compete. But one by one the shows got canceled. In 2015, ABC rebooted Battlebots and in 2016 the stars aligned when I moved out to California and met Ronen Sarig who happened to compete on the first rebooted season with Derek Young's team Mission Destruction. After some sweet talking (and begging), Derek and team let me join them for season 2 as Super Intern.

Project Challenges and Lessons Learned:
The individuals who compete on this show year after year are insane. The amount of time, money, and energy that is needed to build a battle bot that will likely be torn apart in front of you is astronomically high. After season 2 ended, we talked about the future as a team. We were all tired, especially Derek. It was amazing, but we decided to move on to other things. Well, half move on. Derek actually became a judge for future seasons. But no more building (for now). I do not regret anything but rather give respect to those who consistently turn up year after year to put on an amazing show. I think this was a big teaching moment for me. There is only so many hours in a day, and I needed to prioritize that time. I still do projects, but I do alot of other things as well. I am happy with that.

As super intern on a team of 5, I played a support role where ever I could. My tasks ranged from machining parts and general fabrication, to electronics architecture and harness manufacturing, to functional test. Of course when the competition rolled around it was all hands on deck all the time. It differed from my day job in so many ways. I was forced to be scrappy and fast, but diligent to the details at the same time. Anything goes in the battle box so you have to prepare for the worst and be ready for it. You can over engineer everything and still fail miserably. The forces exerted on the bots are huge and you can never truly predict an outcome. Practical experience from the more senior team members really outweighed theory in this example which was good for me after coming out of college.

Seeing all of our hard work come together in the fight against Bombshell made everything worth it. A truly perfect outcome for us. Complete Control is a unique design, and differs from most of the other bots. It puts on a good show, and while it is by no means an optimized fighting design (mainly due to lack of armor weight) it proved its ability and showmanship. And if there was one team to beat us, I am glad it was Warhead driven by team captain Ian Lewis who was a foundational leader in UK based Robotwars. I remember Ian growing up - we came full circle.

Shoutout to everyone on the team! Thanks for letting the intern crash the party. And thank you Derek for leading, inspiring, and driving the team to success.
